It’s Time

Finally!!!

As the mornings get ever darker in the Fall, I personally cannot wait to get back to real time… Standard Time… time derived from the rising and setting of the sun. Time that correlates to the evolution, over millennia, of our internal clock within the landscape, and has nothing to do with economics or politics.

According to Wikipedia, [which is another thing I love and support and will likely expound on it’s virtues in a future newsletter] the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) holds the position that "seasonal time changes should be abolished in favor of a fixed, national, year-round standard time,"and that "standard time is a better option than daylight saving time for our health, mood and well-being."

I couldn’t agree more. Getting morning light into your eyes is the first step toward setting your day up for success.

Sunlight emits a gazillion photons, and when they hit a certain area of your retina in the morning, it activates your internal 24 hour [circadian] clock. Morning light tells your body to release certain hormones on a schedule, affecting your sense of alertness, hunger, sleep, etc., throughout the day. (BTW: This only works in the morning and it has nothing to do with sight!)

Having a pup has shaped my current habit of going for a walk first thing every morning. As the sunlight hits my retinas, I swear I can feel the cortisol flowing into my bloodstream and naturally energizing my body for the day. No caffeine needed!

And now, finally, once again, we will have some morning light to wake up to on Sunday when we turn our clocks back to real Standard Time. Yay!

If you look up at noon, the sun will be at 12 o’clock.Yay!

And sunset will be as early as it needs to be to let your body know it’s time to start winding down and stop shopping for stuff you don’t need.

And you’ll feel better for it.

And order will be restored upon the land! Ha ha! 😄
